Novelty Shops Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: Will the West Edmonton Mall close?

It seems to have lost its magic since the 1980s, with all kinds of speciality shops and unique novelty stores no longer in abundance. (Losing Johnny Rockets and the dolphins were two major ones, but there have been many lost over the years.) Slowly over time, it's become a normal mall. It doesn't seem to be kept up as nice either. And now it's no longer hailed the largest mall in the world. Will the West Edmonton Mall ever get its magic back or will it close? What is the future of this once mammoth wonderland?  more

Resolved Question: What would you do with Mom's Avenger?

My gf and I went to a craft fair to look for a WELCOME sign for her parent's cottage. Among the crafts at one of the wordworking booths were a bunch of paddles etched with words like Mom's Helper and Mom's Avenger. Jokingly, I asked if people really bought them to spank their kids. The guy at the booth said they were conversation pieces that people bought to hang in their rec rooms. But a woman shopping at the display - she was maybe in her mid 20s - said she bought one last year, that hell no, it wasn't for display and everyone knew that, that she used it on her kids and that if I had kids, I should get one too 'cause I'd need it sooner or later. These were not little novelty paddles, or even ping pong paddles. They were easily a foot long, 3" or 4" wide and a good 1/2" thick. The woman wandered away before I could ask what her kids did to deserve a spankin' with Mom's Avenger. And I certainly didn't want to ask if there was a Dad's Avenger for fear of what I might see. So, would you give your kids a spankin' with Mom's Avenger?  more

Voting Question: Is it normal to spend 24/7 with your boyfriend?

My best friend has been dating this guy (who I don't really like) since early January. I thought that she was seeing him so much because it was a new thing, and the novelty of it would soon wear off... But she is still spending all her time with him five months later. Before she started dating this guy, she and I used to spend a lot of time together, and she DID have a boyfriend, who she'd been dating for four years. I would spend days at a time at her house, we would hang out at college and go shopping together. If she ever went anywhere, she would invite me along, and vice versa. Now, she literally sleeps in the same bed as him every night. She doesn't invite me over anymore. She doesn't invite me out anymore, except to pool once a week-- with her boyfriend, and a few of out mutual friends. If I invite her out, she either tells me she can't because she's with him, or she bails on me at the last minute, or she asks if she can bring her boyfriend, and I would feel like a bitch if I said no. Oh! And did I mention the PDA? Whenever we're out in a group, they are always grabbing each other, and kissing.. which, there is nothing wrong with, but if I'm trying to have a conversation with her and all of a sudden he's in her face, and she stops listening.. that really pisses me off. And it happens every. single. time. We don't even talk very often anymore.. and when we do, she's usually complaining about their most recent fight... because they fight A LOT about such stupid stuff, most likely as a result of spending too much time together.I have been dropping hints, telling her I miss her, and that we don't spend as much time together as we used to... She asked me today what I want for my birthday, and I told her that I want to hang out for the day because we haven't in so long. She told me a few months ago that she thinks he is "The One," although I don't know how you can feel that way after knowing someone for only a few months. She's also told me that she puts her relationships first. I really don't understand how she could want to spend so much time with him. I have had boyfriends before, and I have been in love before, but I have always liked to have my personal space. I really think it's an unhealthy relationship, especially considering the way the relationship started... She had been dating this guy that she had met in high school for four years. Towards the end of last year, the problems they'd been having over the course of the relationship were beginning to overwhelm her and she told him she wanted an open relationship. She began hooking up with this new guy, and then she dumped her bf, then got back together with him, and then dumped him again. A few weeks later, this guy who was supposed to be "just a hookup" is her new boyfriend. I may be wrong, but aren't you supposed to allow yourself a little breathing room before jumping right into a new relationship? Again, I really think the whole thing is really unhealthy, and I don't know whether it's my place to say something or not. He has emotional problems of his own, every fight that she's told me about has been instigated by him about the most random, stupid stuff, like buying him a slushie, and she blames herself every time. I really miss my friend, we've been best friends for going on seven years, and I don't think she's in a healthy relationship, and I want her to be happy but I don't want to say the wrong thing and make her hate me.  more

Resolved Question: rate my essay? is it grammartically correct?

Hazards of Going To The Shopping Mall I’m a shopaholic. Friends and family count on me to keep them abreast on the latest trends (pink is the new black!) and inform them of any mega sale. My friends though have stopped asking me if I want to shop or hang out at the mall. While I love shopping as much as ever, the inconvenience of going out, the temptations of the stores and the behavior of some patrons are but a few of the reasons that put me off shopping at the mall. To begin with, I just don’t enjoy the general hassle of making a trip to the local complex. Since the construction boom, many shopping malls have mushroomed around the city, leaving its residents spoilt for choice. The novelty of these gargantuan, shiny complexes has yet to ware off because almost everyday, there are massive traffic jams, comprised of vehicles making their way into the multi storied parking lot, with drivers jostling each other for that elusive parking spot. Most of the time, I find myself driving around in circles until I spot another driver backing out. Then it’s time to brave the crowd of mall rats, whose jostling ways earlier in the car park seem to have grown more aggressive now that they are forced to fight for 21st century human essentials: Shoes! Bags! Clothes! Should you survive the human stampede, congratulations! Now it’s time to face the annoying sales people who delight in shoving brochures, pamphlets and other paraphernalia at you, fake smiles plastered in place as they urge you to buy this or join that. A few years back, Ayubia was only a small town with an amusement park, a shoe store, a small restaurant, and a grocery store. Resolved Question: Small inexpensive items which appeal to students?

Im involved in running a little shop at college, we're supposed to be themed around gadgets, but that can cover a wide range of things. Basically we just buy stock online for the lowest price we can find then sell it on for a profit. We need to think of some new things to sell. At the moment we've got things like remote control helicopters, memory sticks, usb humping dogs, emergency phone chargers and headphones. Our stuff is a bit pricey at the moment, need some cheaper novelty/gadget items. Any suggestions?  more

Resolved Question: To whom should I turn?

I am a grandmother of a 2 year old girl. I have been taking care of her and her 5 year old brother often while their mom and dad work. Her Dad also cares for them while Mom works and has the job of changing diapers, etc. Yesterday, however, I witnessed the most seductive diaper change I have ever seen. Her mother and I would have had her diapered and rediapered four or five times in the time it took her Dad to finish this one change. I had just returned to their house from shopping with my granddaughter and he had been at a meeting at a local restaurant and stopped in to drop off some food. Well, he picked the little girl up hugging and calling her his pretty little girl and when I mentioned that she needed a diaper change he said that he would change her. I went in the other room to get something, figuring diaper changing was very routine for them, when I heard her say "No touch." I thought that was an interesting comment, said so allowed and asked where she got that. He said he thought so too and didn't know. Then he spoke to her in a very soft, sweet voice, that I have never heard coming from him, telling her that if he is going to change her diaper he has to touch her. Then I hear him say "Hot rocks" (referring to her "poops" and she shyly repeated it). By this time I am right there watching. He turns and asks me to get the Desitin although I could see no rash. He then proceeded to apply it with his finger to her anal area, very slowly and gently talking to her all the while asking if he was being gentle enough, still using this unusual tone of voice. (Mind you, this baby is completely exposed lying on her back.) She said yes, but started closing her legs over to one side. She didn't seem comfortable or as comfortable as she is when I change her and she wants to do the wiping herself (as if she is just learning and it is a novelty). I feel strongly enough to discuss this with my daughter (her mom), but need some input on a delicate way to do it. I have thought of suggesting we work on toilet training in earnest, or just asking her to describe a typical diaper change with Daddy. Sounded more to me like he had the "Hot rocks."  more

Resolved Question: Is a crying baby an invitation to instruct the mother how to care for her baby, or touch her baby uninvited?

I had the most horrific experience today at the grocery store, involving my gassy two month old son and several strangers with boundary issues. Now, my son rarely cries. Infact, besides the first day he was born, I haven't heard him cry besides this past week. At this point, I think that now that he's learned how to cry, its kind of a novelty to him. Anyway, today he was in a good mood, and we had some errands to run, so I packed him up in the stroller and walked down to the grocery store. He was happy and smiley the whole way there, but as soon as we got there he starts crying. I get to work trying to soothe him near the entrance of the store. I'm working the gas out, bouncing him in my lap, singing to him, etc... and thankfully most people just walk past, at most casting a sympathetic glance but one man in paticular felt the need to stand there for ten minutes instructing me on how to burp him, and asking repeatedly "you want me to hold him, I can give you a break" I really wasn't stressed out by my son crying- babies cry, thats what they do, and its our job as parents to soothe them, no big deal however I was stressed out by this strange man standing over me, insisting on "helping" me so finally he leaves I figure I should get my son into the air conditioning before he over heated so I take my son inside, and into the bathroom (thinking that the bathroom would have less foot-traffic) and wouldn't you know, as soon as I walk in, behind me walks in another concerned stranger she walks right up to me a strokes my son's face while I'm trying to work the gas out she sticks her face literally 2 inches from his face I try to be polite, I simply walk away thinking she'll get the message no- she follows me and literally tries to take my son out of my arms! I turn my body so she can't take him but she still holds his foot and coo's to him as if she knows him eventually I just said "ma'am, you can go back to your shopping, I'm sure my son will be fine here with me" at which point she rolled her eyes and said "teenage mothers" before she walked away and thats the funny thing- I'm NOT a teenage mother! I'm a married woman in my 20's! and I'm a good mom, no matter what a stranger may say. Now, I know these people are well intentioned but I don't think it was a coincidence that I was able to calm my son as soon as I was left alone with him  more

Resolved Question: President Obama - What could possibly be wrong with this - Are people being too sensitive?

Obama Afro-hair Plant Outrage By VINCE SOODIN Published: 09 Apr 2009 A BARACK Obama terracotta style plant pot was pulled off shop shelves after claims it was racist. The novelty pot has the President's head sprout afro-like hair when vegetation grows out of the top of it. But the mini-bust has met with complaints with some arguing it was disrespectful to the leader of the free world. And others even suggesting it was racist. The pot has been pulled by some stores of US giant shopping chain Walgreens. But the makers of the pot said they still expect record-breaking sales. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2369482.ece  more

Resolved Question: Rights on being in a store?

I was thinking about something that happened. I may be holding a grudge, but this is important to me. What are people's rights on being in a semi-public space such as a store? I looked this up a little (I looked on wikipedia... It's easy to understand, and it's not perfect but it's pretty reliable), and it says that "A shop is an example of what is intermediate between the two meanings: everybody can enter and look around without obligation to buy, but activities unrelated to the purpose of the shop are not unlimitedly permitted." Basically, I'm wondering about this situation: -A group of teenagers enter a Waterbeds 'n Stuff store. They walk towards the back while looking at the beds and intend to go to look at the novelty items. They're not making noise or behaving badly. The manager promptly tells them to leave, and part of what he says has to do with being without parents (which is irrelevant, since, to my knowledge, minors are allowed in the store without parents) and the fact that he's trying to make a sale (which is also irrelevant, because the manager was not interrupted or disturbed by the teens. He just happened to be distracted.). The teenagers leave. What I'm wondering is, did the manager have the right to do this? What are teens rights on being in a store? What are adult's rights? What can I do to keep this from happening again if I go somewhere with a group of friends? Sorry for the lengthy question... This was just weighing on my mind and I was somewhat bored... So I decided to ask about it. The funny thing is the group of teenagers hasn't been in the store long enough to buy something before getting kicked out XD so i guess he was allowed, am I right?  more

Resolved Question: When did you start pocket money?

My son is now Six for the past year or so he's been doing little things like putting dishes away, Picking up leaves and sticks on the pavement and he loves to Vac. Each time he does something he always gets a tick on the rewards chart and at the end of the week if has so many ticks he gets to play X amount of mins on the Wii during the weekend. For example if he gets 20-29 ticks he gets 30mins on the Wii, if he gets 30-39 he gets 40min if he gets 40-49 he gets an hour. Lately I have been having to take him shopping with me because my husband works away so much. For many years he has had a piggy bank that he has collected all the change that get's left around the house. You know the stuff that falls out of pockets in the wash and when you put your hand in the bottom of a bag or that has been just plain dropped etc. He's been living off this stuff for years like he wanted an novelty electric toothbrush and I said he had to pay me back with money from his bank. But now I need to take him shopping every time and he's pretty much run out of the change. Last time he came he paid for an ice-cream with .5c coins took for ever for the lady to count it out. I was thinking of maybe starting him off with each job he does he gets a .50c so he's have at least $5 by the end of the week. That would be enough for him to get ice-cream and maybe a $2 car or he could save it for something big later. Just to clear up he never asks for me to pay for treats at the shops he just asks if he can have one. I usually say yes IF he has enough money in his wallet. If he has forgotten his wallet he usually doesn't ask at all because he knows he will get a no.  more

Resolved Question: She wants me to be her matron of honor?

My husband's brother is getting married in May. The plan is small courthouse wedding, nothing major. I like the two of them okay, but never considered doing anything major for it. (I got married last year and they didn't bring a gift, not even a card and their daughter screamed the entire time I was saying my vows.) Well, I've put the past behind me. Now my husband tells me I need to throw a bridal shower and bachelorette party for the girl because no one else is. I don't know if I want to, but since I work at an adult novelty shop and get discounts, I did make her a fun bachelorette gift basket. This morning, my husband woke me up and told me "Alana wants you to be her Matron of honor." I was really confused. I asked why. He said because her family doesn't like my brother-in-law, so I'm next in line. This really confused me because supposedly they are having a courthouse wedding and she's not even going to have a wedding dress. Why does she need bridesmaids? And she didn't ask me, she asked him to ask me! I've always wanted to be a bridesmaid, but I feel like I'm the last on her list and I'm being used. What would you do? thanks for all the mature thoughtful answers. I may do a girls night out for her, even just the two of us, but not with her family. They have made it very clear that they don't think anyone in our family is good enough to socialize with (although I have no idea where they get this idea).  more

Resolved Question: I need to know do other ppl do this in life or maybe just me and someone else?

I was at the mall yesterday and saw a man remind me of my ex bf and ex lover. He was holding his daughter. I picture in my head he was my husband and that was our child. instead of the mall we were in the kitchen playing with OUR lil daughter along with other novelty fantasy lifestyle. I do that sometimes I can meet someone and just get caught up. With ladies I can meet someone and just picture us being friends going shopping and doing all this girly type of friends stuff. I know jay z had a video like that called "excuse me miss" where he's picture hisself proposing to a girl taking her shopping and all. Then when it's done he was just dreaming for a second. Why does this happen, is it crazy? Do other men do this besides jay z and do other ladies do this too?  more

Resolved Question: I wanna work at a sex toy shop, but I might stand out too much?

Okay, well I have an interview with a sex toy shop... I feel right about what i'm going to say and everything, however I feel that my appearance will side-track the business, and the person interviewing me... I don't dress slutty or anything, but I tend to wear a lot of makeup, have my hair done, and I get a lot of attention from people. I'm not boasting about that shit, but I feel like my image may come across to my boss as prestegious and too attention-drawing... I have been in a few adult novelty stores and i've always noticed that the female employers never look too attractive...they appear normal and casual. That is my problem lol, do you think my manager will care when he interviews me?  more

This is for a carnival type sales. I currently have a booth that does face painting and hair designs but I am looking for something to sell. This is my first time selling anything at my booth so I am looking for something really cheap. A few months ago I found a site that has inflatables toys like the crayons and guitars and things and they were like .30 cents each or you can buy them by the dozen I am looking for something like this. Resolved Question: Mother in Law Issue, Please help?

I’m worried that my mother in law is becoming too attached to our son and that my husband is losing interest in him. I became pregnant after my husband loss his job due to outsourcing. It was no problem because I make enough money to support the three of us. We don’t live lavishly but we are getting by better than most folks these days. My husband is supposed to be taking care of our son while I’m at work but he spends the day at his parents’ house and usually his mother ends up caring for him. A few weeks ago he started to come home without our son. His mother insists that our son stay with her over night. I’m upset about this because I don’t get to spend very much time with our son as it is. Also I don’t feel that he is watching him during the day to begin with, so how can he claim that he is too tired at night? Granted my husband does run arrands sometimes during the day, but not every day. Since he's not at our house, I still have to come home and clean up, make dinner, even go grocery shopping. At the same time, his grandparents dote on him very much and spend huge sums of money on him, buying the novelty baby items that we can’t afford to buy him and even chip in with diapers and formula. They’ve furnished his entire nursery, threw a huge baby shower, christening, and are planning a huge first birthday party for him next month. I go to great lengths to not appear ungrateful. I have empathy for my husband, being a stay at home dad must be difficult, and children can be a handful. I understand him wanting a break but three weeks worth of nights off? If I want to see my son I have to go over his parent’s house and that arrangement makes me uncomfortable. The other night I wanted to bring our son home, his mother threw a fit. My husband claims that things are rocky between her and his dad and having a baby in the house is bringing them together again. How can I get him to understand that not having our baby in our house is splitting us up! How can I take my son back without making his mother feel that I am threatening her marriage or her rights as a grandparent? I just wanted to provide some details. My husband had been doing great as a stay at home dad up until November. He WOULD cook, clean, do laundry, grocery shop and everything. In November he was called for several interviews. He got his hopes up only to have them dashed when he wasn’t hired. During that time, while he was away for an hour or two on an interview, is when he started to take our son to his mother’s, then spend the rest of the day after his interview there. This is how/when spending the day’s there started. When we thought there was a possibility of him returning to work we made arrangements for his mother to watch our son during the day, as daycare is an unattractive expense for us right now. His parents seemed to not understand that this arrangement was ONLY if he was hired. My husband was understandably down around Christmas so I didn’t want to bring up my concerns about spending all day at his parent’s and not getting things done around our house. The more down he got, the more his mother stepped in. There is a language barer, his mother understands English but doesn’t speak it clearly. It’s hard for me to get certain things across and easy for me to come off wrong if my body language is a bit aggressive. I usually depend on him to communicate with them on our behalf. Also there is a cultural difference; his parents openly disapprove of me working and him staying home. They put a lot of pressure on him about finding a job. For them, I’m not a “real” mom and he’s not a “real” father. I usually ignore all this for the sake of us all getting along.  more

Resolved Question: How old is your cooker / microwave ?

London, January 24 (ANI): A Panasonic oven that has been in working condition for more than 40 years, and used for making over 150,000 meals, is claimed to be Britain's oldest working microwave. Proud owner Frederick Stephens, a 78-year-old grandfather-of-four, has been using it on a daily basis ever since he bought it in the Sixties. He paid 250 pounds for it at a time when microwaves were still "life-changing" additions to the family kitchen. He said that the microwave had broken down only once in over four decades, and even then its repair only required a simple lightbulb to be replaced. "I use it all the time to heat up ready meals and to do my Horlicks before I go to bed every night. It's marvellous really. I'm so surprised it has lasted this long. It was a real novelty when we bought it as there weren't many around in those days," the Telegraph quoted Stephens, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, as saying. "Even the shop which sold it has gone now, but the microwave itself is still going strong. We've definitely had our moneys worth."  more

Resolved Question: ANY CAKE DECORATERS OUT THERE??? PLEASE HELP?

Right well I've come to cross roads in my life and after a long hard thought, I have decided to persue my personal dream of being self-employed making cakes!! Ever since being little I have stared at novelty cakes in shop windows and used to love the cakes my great uncle made me when i was little too. (He has sadly passed away now, so i can't ask him for any advice) Plus it would be an added bonus working from home of course. But my question is WHERE DO I START?? I have looked at cake decorating courses at colleges near me and they either aren't what i'm looking for (mainly pastry, desserts etc) or they can't confirm that the course will actually take place or i cannot get there by transport easily!! There is not alot on offer for me... However, there are alot of courses 'for pleasure' looking at cake decorating, icing, sugarcraft etc etc..... I would love to book myself on these courses but i am worried that i may be wasting my time?! Is it necessary to obtain NVQ Level 1-3 in cake decorating? Or is experience sufficient?? Any help/tips etc would be much appreciated. Thanks xx I am based in UK  more

Resolved Question: Just looking for an outsider's viewpoint...are my husband and I incompatible/drifting apart?

Or is this normal crap from 5+ years of marriage? Breif synopsis: My husband and I have been married for about 5 1/2 years now, and at first, we were so into one another and in love. It seems this novelty wore off when we went through a bout with difficulty conceiving our only child together, about 2 years into the marriage. Things just haven't been the same since then. Now I realize we have little in common anymore. From music tastes to food tastes, and all points beyond and in between, we are as far apart as two people could have drifted. I daydream of meeting a man with passion, fire and drive. I feel so tapped out in this "arrangement" with him. I feel like I'm his mother and not his wife. I work part time, and he works full time. But, I do EVERYTHING. And, when I say everything, I mean wipe the baby's ass, Cook breakfast, cook dinner, cook lunch, dust, mow the grass, clean the floors, do the laundry, arrange appointments for the kids and pets, remember said appointments and keep them, deal with my combat PTSD, handle own my VA appointments and counselings, vaccum, help my son with his homework, shop, pay bills, deal with contractors and basically I parent both kids alone for the most part ( I have an older son from my previous marriage). I feel like a single parent of three kids instead of a married woman with 2 kids and husband. To his defense, he does have severe back problems and sleep apnea. I don't expect him to move mountains up in here, just to help me, and do something more than sit on his ass at the computer playing PC games and twiddling his balls soon as he gets home, and/or watching HOUSE or CSI while I scurry about like a little crackhead doing everything. It's making me so sick. My only true love is gone forever, and his memory haunts me like a ghost...but I just remember that those days are gone. Now I'm stuck with this lazy oaf who makes me so miserable... somedays I just want to run away with all my savings to Canada or Belgium or Japan or something and start over. Then I think about my kids, and it is like a bitter reality. I'm so unhappy. He doesn't stimulate my mind. Ever. He is so mundane and predictable and the only things he gets passionate about are WWE wrestling and beer. Ugh. The way he smells even irritates me. I've kept myself up while he's just fell to the wayside and when I try and wear sexy things he's rather rendez-vous with the Serta and the mink blankets and start calling the hogs. I haven't got any good rest in years because of his sleep issues and his snoring, even the night I had the baby in the hospital, he slept on the guest pullout and SNORED all night. Ok, now I'm rambling but I'm so at my wits end. I cry in the shower and bathroom every day almost and probably drink more than I should. I don't know i something like this can be fixed. What do you think??? Honestly, if I could give my force to another so that they could live, like some poor kid with leukemia whose parents pray for them to recover daily...I would. And I would expire in their place, because my life just sucks so bad. I'm not even scared to die anymore. Let's think..you can shove off and troll someone else. He just (praise the heavens and stars) got a CPAP machine a few days ago, and so far, things are well on that front.  more

Resolved Question: Camden, London: Where to shop/go out?

I'm visiting London soon, and am very keen to check out Camden. I was there last year, but we had little time in Camden and no time to explore, and all the markets we found were rather trashy, selling novelty t-shirts, lighters with The Simpson's on it, poppers and magic mushrooms... Not quite the image I had of Camden. Where can you go to find some unique things, like clothing, bags, accessories, records, that kind of stuff? Also, last time, we went out to a bar near Oxford Street, but weren't impressed... As we will be staying in Camden, most likely, we'd like to know about some places to go out there, not necessarily clubs, just somewhere with a nice atmosphere and friendly people. Any other tips of London gems that isn't in the guidebooks will also be very much appreciated =)  more
