Open Question: Male dog...Can they go in heat. or is there another term? and how do i control it?
I have a siberian husky who is now atleast 15months. he seems to be "over normal" and likes to have a good sniff at every women that steps into the house. Is he frisky? he hasnt tried mounting a women but he did mount a friend of mine. is there anything i can do. We are not looking to get him snipped yet. so is there any other solutions for the time being? thanks Ok, thank you guys. im guessing the best bet is to neutered him then. Cheers everyone for going out there. =) going out here way* Lol Thank you Keleah S, the document from what i just read so far seems to be really good on terms of what i need to do. thank you very much. moreOpen Question: WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO VOTE FOR MY PUPPY?
Is there anyone here who likes to look at puppy photos? I have this one photo of my Siberian Husky whose name was Indy, and I entered it into a dog photo contest. I would really like to win this contest, and so if I can find some willing voters here tonight I would be absolutely thrilled. And ESPECIALLY if you rate my photo a 10!!!!!! =) I have gotten some good votes and I am so glad that there are people who liked my dog's photo! ***FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT INDY - He was with us for 2 years before he was taken by an incurable neurological disease...it was really sad...but he is in a better place - no one can tell me that dogs don't go to heaven! =) Thank you to anyone who votes for my pup, I would be SO grateful!!! The contest ends in ONE DAY!! ^^ http://www.dogballot.com/vote_default.php?vote=25392 moreOpen Question: Can the average man defeat a Siberian Husky in one on one weaponless combat?
To me it seems like the dog would have a great advantage, but it does have weak points that a human could attack that the dog wouldn't necessarily be aware of on the human. Would you even be able to reach for its eyes when it's biting your neck? By "weaponless" I meant the man can't have a knife or gun or spear... If you consider the dog's weapons to be claws and teeth, then you could consider the person's weapons nails and teeth, and then it's a toothless dude against a toothless dog... While interesting to think about, not what I was asking... Loki - You didn't ruin anything, but thanks for playing. Loki - And I think your protection there of huskies is borderline reverse dog racism. People are always saying how pitbulls and rottweilers aren't naturally violent animals, its just the owners that make them violent, meanwhile you're telling me that a husky will only be violent if it's bred that way... Care to expound on that? moreOpen Question: What type of food should I feed a new siberian puppy from childhood to adulthood?
I have heard that for feeding your siberian husky that you shouldn't trust commercial dog food such as pedgree and other's. That it is better to feed them raw steak and eggs, or raw eggs and chicken breast's. Is this true and should the chicken be stripped of the bones and just the meat to insure that the dog doesn't choke. Also when the pup is young and fresh from the breeder what should i feed him for how long, until he is ready for the transition of food? moreOpen Question: What kind of dog do you have?

I have a almost 9 month old siberian husky puppy who is great! Only he has recently gotten into some bad habits recently while I have been away for the summer and my fiancé is taking care of him alone while taking summer classes! Overall his obedience is okay, he can sit, shake, come, lay down, is potty trained, is great with strangers and other dogs etc...His only problems are recent. He has started eating everything he can reach loafs of bread wallets apples notebooks the couch end tables etc... He also is a hunter, which is something we have no trained him to do he just likes to kill rodents and birds if he can catch them. what disturbs me is I think he wants to eat the kittens next door. =( Also he is not fixed yet... and so the other dogs pick on him that are male and he is a big baby so he ends up getting his butt kicked and I think if he is fixed other males will learn to leave him alone but I have no idea. If anyone knows any trainers or idea on how to break his bad habits and social issue it would be amazing! Because I am all out of ideas. I know petsmart has a class but i think he needs something more individualized maybe... thanks moreResolved Question: Which puppy do you think is cuter? {For Fun!} (Picturess!)?

Sorry. My questions all tend to be lengthy! I like to add details. I have a 6 year old female Siberian Husky who is outside during the day. That’s the way she likes it. She comes inside at night, and when we are home. I also have a 5 month old male Kelpie, who is inside at the moment since he is a puppy. This is where the fun begins. My husband and I walk/run both of them for an hour every day, in the evening, and they both get loads of attention. However, my puppy still gets bored during the day while we’re at work (8 hours). I leave him plenty of toys to play with, things to chew. I scatter vegetables on the floor for him to scavenge. He has puppy bones to gnaw on. Yet he still chews up my dining chair legs. And my coffee table. And he’s started at my TV cabinet. I’m surprised he hasn’t torn the stuffing out of the couch. Now, I don’t blame him for getting bored, it’s not his fault. He is not crate-trained, and I have no intention of doing so. Different strokes for different folks. So we’re going to put him outside while we’re at work, so he can play with our Husky while we’re gone, and keep each other company. Problem is, he barks. A lot. We trialled him about a week ago for a few hours, so see how he’d go outside without us “being at home” (we just stayed in the living room where he couldn’t see us), and it was terrible. Non stop barking. So we bought a PetSafe shock-collar on the weekend, which I really didn’t want to do :o( I really wanted to use the citronella spray collar, but the cost is ridiculous. $400 for something that will last 80 sprays per refill? My kelpie barks 80 times in 30 minutes. The refills are $70. We eased him into it, leaving it “uncharged” on him for the weekend, and yesterday (took it off during the nights). He had it on, switched on, last night while he was inside, but didn’t bark much at all, and he didn’t react in the slightest. This morning before work, I put the shock collar on him and put him outside, and kept an eye on him for a few minutes. Lo and behold, he started barking. And the shock collar kicked in, starting off with a tingle at the first bark, and working its way up to ‘level 6’. By the third time he barked, he was yelping and dashing around frantically, trying to find out what was happening. I was mortified. That’s not what the manual said would happen. I quote: “Most dogs will understand very quickly that the Bark Control Collar is disrupting their urge to bark and will relax and stop barking. Because the Static Correction from the Bark Control Collar may be surprising or startling at first, some dogs may bark more at the initial correction.” He was anything but relaxed. I brought him inside, soothed him gently until he was calm, and decided to leave him inside for the day. Better than having him yelping all day in pain. I’m pretty damn sure I fitted the collar to him correctly, it’s not exactly rocket science. I read the manual, and did as it said. So my question: Are they supposed to respond to bark control collars like this? Have you used a shock collar for your dog? If so, which brand and how did it work out? Obviously I can’t use a remote control one, since I won’t be at home. I do not want to harm my dog. I want to correct him for his barking behaviour, however unfortunately, I don’t have the leave-time from work to positive-reinforce him all day while he’s outside. And before you say anything, yes, both my dogs are fixed. And also, none of that “try it on yourself, stupid!” Dogs skin is MUCH tougher than human flesh. And the fur also deadens the shock. I never said crate training is bad - It's good. It's just something I choose not to do. The same way that clicker training can be good, it's just something I choose not to do. moreVoting Question: why isn't my dog eating?

Im getting a puppy but I don't know what kind to get. Im getting either a german sheperd, or a siberian husky. What kind do you think is a better pet? moreVoting Question: Which dog to adopt? (Akita, Husky, other large breed)?
I'm a single professional guy looking to adopt my first dog since I was 8 year old. I'm live in a apt. 900 sp ft. in a dog friendly building with a small park across the street. I'm looking to adopt a dog soon and I love the Akita breed. I've done some research on the breed and believe it will be a good fit for my lifestyle and future lifestyle. I'm single no and work so the dog will be alone in my apt (crated in the begging for 8 - 9 hours. I don't have any children now but I'd like to have a family (wife and kids in the future). Maybe 2 - 4 years. My first love is the Siberian Husky but after researching I don't think I have to time go give him/her enough exercise or room. From what I read I think an 1 1/2 - 3 year old Akita will be great. As long as I can adopt one that was raised around children. I think by getting an adult dog I can avoid some of the puppy issues and responsibilities I don't think I can step up too. My big concern is the dog's happiness and ability to change lifestyles in the future. Note: I plan to move into a home with a yard this fall so the apt living will be temporary for the dog. So if anyone has any advice or input I'd appreciate it. moreResolved Question: How do I stop a husky from digging?
I am so frustrated. I have a HUGE yard and an Alaskan Malamute who is about 4 years old. She's very well behaved, but she was lonely, so I got a Siberian Husky for her to play with. In general, he's been an ok-behaved dog, but he is a puppy, so he still has accidents in the house (which I can deal with) and a few other problems like chewing and such. The MAIN issue I have is he keeps digging a tunnel under my fence to see the neighbor dog. I do I break him of this?? Please help. I don't want to tie up my dog if I don't have to. I have a big yard for a reason. More info is that he has had basic obedience training. He can sit, lie down, and stay on command. I worked with him alot as he was growing. Also, my fence is brand new. I had to get a new one because even though my Malamute is a sweetheart, she's also a jumper, and the shorter fence was no problem for her to scale. I understand that the huskies are diggers, but I was just seeing if there was some way to curb the urge. My malamute used to dig, but she just grew out of it eventually. I've heard sometimes huskies do not grow out of it. I'm just trying to nip a bad habit in the bud if there is a way. Thanks. Oh, and he gets tons of daily exercise. Like I said, I have a huge yard. When the two of them play, they are exhausted by the end of it because they run around for hours. Also, he's not even 6 months yet, so I haven't had him neutered yet. I just want to thank you guys for giving me some insight. I know "why" he's digging (to play with the neighbor dog), but I was just trying to find some alternatives to get him to stop doing it. He's spoiled, plenty exercised, well-trained and sweet. In general, he truly is a good dog, especially for a husky puppy. I just don't want to lose him. I think I agree with the wire. It should take him one time to learn not to do that. Better than finding him dead somewhere. moreVoting Question: How do I keep my dogs cool in the heat?
I have 4 Siberian Huskies, 2 Alaskan Malamutes and 5 Wolf Hybrids and where I live it is 73 degrees but it's suppose to get up to 96 degrees.Out of the 4 acres they live on there is only like 6 or 7 trees. I bought a small plastic pool for them but that isn't enough. Does anyone have any creative ideas on what I can do to keep them cool? moreVoting Question: neutering Siberian Husky?
Hi Everyone. I have 2 huskys a male and a female. the male is 7 months and booked in to be neutered next month. My only concern is that since I havebooked it. A lot of people have said it will ruin him - he is so bubbly and active and confident and i dont want that to change. We have a female also and the comment from one of the 'advisors' was that it would make her much more dominant and he would be cowery! I dont want to send him in to have it done and have him come back a different dog - i love my nanuq too much for that. Although he reached sexual maturity at 4 months he hasnt shown any dog/dominatnt like tendancies even though our female is in season at the moment and is really great to train. Just wondering what anyone else thought. I think i am having second thoughts anyway because I did not want to get him neutered in the first place but was doing it becuase of pressures from my vet an dobviously not wanting an unexpected puppy litter! 30 minutes ago - 4 days left to answer. moreVoting Question: Neutering a Siberian husky?

Mine are: 1. Siberian Tiger 2. Siberian Husky (plus all other dogs) 3. Chimpanzee I've played with Siberian Tigers before, they're really friendly as long as you like animals. If animals know you aren't scared of them, then they are always nice. moreResolved Question: American Pit Bull Terrier? Good or Bad choice?
Family of 3. Step mother , father & 14 year old girl. We own a house now so we're finally willing to get a puppy. We have friends & relatives & even neighbors with an APBT. Step mother is a stay at home mom. And the daughter does go to school from 7am-1pm. Someone is always home. We're an active family and yes, would definitely include the dog in nearly everything we do. Not just lock the pup up in a room & call it quits. And are also considering training if we do happen to adopt or "purchase" from a breeder in our area. We've had a boxer & a Siberian Husky who both grew up together & died of old age. Now that the child is older we're considering another dog. Opinions? Any other breeds you would recommend? We've all sat down, talked and did homework on the breed itself but im trying to make this short...well to late for that. But yea, moreResolved Question: MY DOG IS SURROUNDED BY FLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

ok. i just got back from walking them and they got in a fight while walking. it was a pretty big fight. it all started when martie found something to eat on the side of the road and i didn't want her to eat it, so i tugged on her leash just enough to get her away from it and that set bandit off. i don't know what happened. and i'm afraid that if i ignore it, it will turn into a bigger problem. help? and they pull very violently on their leads. i would like to have them walk beside me, not pulling me down the road. anything i can do? *nearest trainer - 100 or so miles away* *please do not suggest the "gentle leader" or anything like that* siberian husky & border collie mix moreResolved Question: Girl Dog Name? Nothing cheesy like "Tinkerbell"?
Ok, I might be getting a siberian husky puppy with some gorgeous blue eyes. However, I don't want to name her a russian name or "alaska" or "juno". I also don't like names like Tinkerbell or Princess. For boys, I like the names Hendrix, Rocky, Rambo, etc. But it's impossible for me to come up with a girl name. The only one me and the boyfriend can agree on so far is MaryJane, but I want to hear more suggestions please. moreResolved Question: Does anyone have any ideas?

my dog was born on january 31st hes a siberian husky. that makes him just about 5 months old. today is june 26th. now... im with him 24/7 and im absolutely in love with him. i cant close a door behind me and leave him alone without him screaming to be near me. whenever he lies down he HAS to be touching me. like he puts his head on my foot :P hes my son and im his pops. so now im sure you can see the problem. id be heart broken to have to leave him in quarantine for 4 months. ive called the people back at home (hawaii) and they are pretty rude... and make the calls pretty fast so i cant ask them all the questions i want to. and when i do it feels like they dont answer them as good as they should be. he had his rabies shot recently maybe a few weeks ago maybe a little more than that. but from what they told me the dog needs 2 rabies shots then i need to send the blood off to kansas so they can monitor it or whatever. then i can fly him home with me. im sorry for this being so long but im sure you all have pets you love too and would want to be sure :] if i leave see 60 days into the 120 day period after sending the blood to kansas will my dog only be in quarantine for the remaining 60 days (they say 120 days tops i think so it could be less) or are they going to make him stay for 120 days again... and on top of that i dont even understand why they need 2 rabies shots. lol 1 shot is just as good as 2. my vet was like wtf are they talking about?? anyways heres a picture of him for your time. its the least i could do. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/beefcake808/0514091718.jpg?t=1246041399 http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/beefcake808/0617090250a.jpg?t=1246041422 no hes not sick im going back home to hawaii i got him while i was here in north carolina. i dont like it in the main land and need to be where i was born and raised. moreResolved Question: My Siberian Husky loves to play with large dogs, but plays to rough with small dogs, how to fix this?
Well we have a 3 month old Siberian Husky who just LOVES to rough house it with the big dogs. He has a great time playing with the larger breeds, but whenever he is around the smaller breeds he gets all excited and tries to charge them. Aside from the fact that its not the most ideal behavior for a dog, this is my mom and my dog (family dog) and I plan on purchasing a Doberman puppy after this one is fully grown, and I am just a bit nervous about how this one will deal with the other puppy. Is this just him being a puppy and he'll change over time, or is this something I need to correct now while he's young? P.S. I had to put my Doberman puppy to sleep a while back for those who I had spoken to regarding Dobermans in the past. We put him down in December of 08 and after dealing with a crazy PSYCHO breeder who knew from day 1 we didnt have a fenced in yard, but still took our $500 deposit (pup costed $1800), made us wait for over a month and just 2 days before we were supposed to go pick up the puppy told us she doesnt sell her dogs to people without a fenced in yard EVEN THOUGH SHE KNEW WE DIDNT HAVE ONE FROM THE BEGINNING! So yea we just went out and bought this one because we liked him a lot and decided to wait a little while before attempting to get back into searching for breeders since that was such a hair pulling experience, seeing as how breeders come across as very "odd" people (or at least the ones we came across anyways) No no I'm not getting a Doberman puppy right now, I am planning on moving from here to about an hour away to live closer to my mom. I plan on purchasing a larger house with a fenced in back yard, and I dont plan on doing this until about 2 or 3 years from now. I just thought that since my Husky is small now, if he him acting this way towards small dogs now is something to be worried about, better to fix it now then have it be a problem later when I look into getting a second dog, ya know what I mean? moreMore Siberian Huskies Dogs Results
