Voting Question: I have a question about a combat rule in Magic the Gathering. MTG?

Ok, lets say a Wall of Denial is defending a creature who deals damage in the for of -1/-1. ( Wither) Lets say its -3/-3... When damage takes place the wall becomes a -3/-5, so would something be gaining health here? I heard someone say negative power gave health to wat it attacked. Is this true in any situation or at all? Sorry, the would actually be -3/5  more

Resolved Question: Help with my Spellcaster Yu-gi-oh Deck.?

Ok so I know Yu-gi-oh is really not that cool. I'm actually thinking of trying out Magic the Gathering, but I saw the new Yu-Gi-Oh spellcaster deck and I thought huh I sort of want to look into that. So I'm going to post my current Spellcaster Deck, then cards I have that may or may not work in the deck, and then cards that are in the new Spellcaster Deck that I think would fit in nicely. Don't bother posting cards I don't point out because I don't have the money to go out and buy amazing cards like Injection Fairy Lily or things like that. One final point is that my friends and i don't care about limited and forbidden cards the only rule we enforce is no more than 3 so keep that in mind. So let's begin. ~~Monsters~~ Silent Magician LV8 Dark Eradicator Warlock Dark Magician Chaos Command Magician Chaos Sorcerer Dark Magician Girl Gemini Elf Skilled Dark Magician Skilled Dark Magician Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer Rapid-Fire Magician Breaker the Magical Warrior Mythical Beast Cerberus White Magician Pikeru Tsukuyomi Silent Magician LV4 Frequency Magician Old Vindictive Magician Apprentice Magician Magician of Faith Copycat ~~Magic~~ United We Stand Raigeki Swords of Revealing Light Pot of Avarice Monster Reincarnation Magical Dimension Magical Dimension Mystical Space Typhoon Mage Power Yami Monster Reborn Magical Blast Nighmare's Steelcage Spell Absorption Pot of Greed Change of Heart ~~Traps~~ Magic Cylinder Magician's Circle Shadow Spell Dimensional Prison Spirit Barrier Divine Wrath Spell Shield Type-8 Threatening Roar Scrap-Iron Scarecrow Trap Hole Call of the Haunted Magic Jammer Now for cards I have the have spellcaster potential. ~~Monsters~~ Thousand-Eyes Restrict Relinquished Thousand-Eyes Idol Peten the Dark Clown Peten the Dark Clown Peten the Dark Clown Witch of the Black Forest Time Wizard Magical Merchant ~~Magic~~ Black Illusion Ritual Polymerization Lightning Vortex Burden of the Mighty Spiritualism Mystic Box ~~Traps~~ Pitch-Black Power Stone Anti-Spell Fairy Box Raigeki Break Michizurf Cards I'm interested in putting into my deck from the new Spellcaster Deck: ~~Monsters~~ Endymion the Master Magician Defender the Magical Knight Dark Red Enchanter Skilled Dark Magician Old Vindictive Magician Magical Marionette Breaker the Magical Warrior Magical Exemplar ~~Magic~~ Magical Citadel of Endymion Magician's Unite Mage Power Enemy Controller Magical Dimension ~~Traps~~ Magician's Circle Tower of Babel Magic Cylinder So those are the cards i have and are considering adding. Obviously I'm going to be removing cards and adding and I'd really not like my deck count to exceed 50. I'm fine with my deck at 50 cards. So yeah help away or if you really think I should give up Yu-gi-oh all together and pick up my first Magic the Gathering starter deck then tell me why i should.  more

Resolved Question: Do you have to discard a card during turn two of Magic the Gathering?

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering instant spells destroy defender, does attacker do damage to owner?

I'm playin through the challenges on MTG: duels of the planeswalker on xbox live arcade, I've tried on a few different ones to destroy the creatures defending against my heavy hitters, I destroy the defenders, my creature attacks the player, but NO damage is dealt... Is this because of the rules, or because there's only one specific way to win the challenges, and the devs don't like me thinking outside the box?  more

Resolved Question: Rules Clarification for Magic: The Gathering?

Whenever the card "Gravepact" is in play, "Whenever a creature you control is put into a graveyard from play, each other player sacrifices a creature." I attacked with one of my creatures, a 2/2, and my husband blocked with a white card whose only ability was to boost other Kithkins in play. also a 2/2. That means that my card was put into my graveyard, and so was his. Now for the question. Can he sacrifice his creature that is already on the way to the graveyard (from defending) to Gravepact's ability, if the card itself does not have a sacrifice ability? Let me know if you need more clarification. lol no i havnt asked the question on the Gatherer, but its nice to know that im not the only one lol thanks!  more

Resolved Question: question about magic the gathering rules and damage distribution, and responding to activated abilities.?

Okay so my question is simple if a 8/8 creature is blocked by two creatures each having 3/3 are both of the blocking creatures killed or do i just pick one? My friend tells me that i can only distribute excess damage beyond one creature if i a creature had trample, but i always thought trample only applied to damage excess that would go to the player. My second question is also simple, let's say i activate alladin's ring to deal 4 damage can a player respond to it by bouncing back the ring so the 4 damage ability wont go on the stack? i mean to what extent can a bounce like boomerang be used to counter activated abilities, both tapping and non tapping abilities.  more

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering: New vs. Old Editions?

My friend told me something that made me believe that older cards are no longer accepted in Magic tournaments (I prefer to play by tournament rules, rather than "casual"). I haven't played Magic for very long, and I'm not very familiar with tournament rules or anything... But it seems like banning older cards means banning a LOT of cards. Here's an example of an older card: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/Hadeki/Island.jpg And here's a newer card: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/Hadeki/MoonringMirror.jpg So far I've avoided all cards that don't have the border like the latter card. But I just want to be sure I'm not missing out on, like... hundreds of cards I could be using.  more

Resolved Question: Magic 2010 Rules Changes?

Resolved Question: Playing the activated abilities of non-creature artifacts in Magic: the Gathering?

If I played a card like Scepter of Dominance on my turn (card can be seen here: http://magiccards.info/cfx/en/17.html) can I use its activated ability the turn it came out? I was told I could not because it suffered from summoning sickness, like all permanents put into play, and therefore could not use its ability because it has a tap cost as part of its ability. Other people, however, have told me that I can use its ability the turn it comes out. Which is correct and what rule does this apply to?  more

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering (MTG), question regarding protection from cards and Enchantments, Equipments?

My friend who is very stubborn and a sore loser, tries to find any loophole to go his favor. His latest 30 minute tirade involves his Goblin Outlander and my Nemesis of Reason equipped with Righteous Defense Artifact. Shield of Righteousness (W)(B): Equipped creature gets +0/+2 and has vigilance. Whenever equipped creature blocks a creature, that creature doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step. Goblin Outlander Protection from white His logic was that since Righteous Defense is a white artifact equipped to my blue and black Nemesis, that automatically makes his outlander immune from my Nemesis so that I cannot block him with that card. My logic being that I am blocking with NoR, not SoR, so i'm legal. The SoR doesn't make NoR a white creature. Maybe I could give him that the SoR won't leave him tapped on his untap phase, but I think even that goes beyond what's covered in protection's rules. I read the DEBT rules to him, but him being the most stubborn human in the world, still believes he is right because his scenario is not explicitly stated. I just need a reputable poster and/or an official rulebook highlighting this particular scenario and some further clarification if needed.  more

Resolved Question: in magic the gathering, what is a cards type if...?

if the card has a yellow background (not white... it isnt a plains monster), and is a dual type, then what are the rules concerning it? (it has both red & dark mana requirements) is it considered a black creature or a red creature, or both, or neither? help please?! and if its both, do cards that kill one of the types but not the other affect it? or cards that kill non-black cards, what is their effect on it? sorry this is so long but im really confused...  more

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering simple rule question-Cloudchaser Eagle?

When trying to play Cloudchaser Eagle I realized it said "when Cloudchaser Eagle comes into play, destroy target enchantment". I saw that my opponent did not have any enchantments, but I have an enchantment called Light of Day in play. Since this was the only enchantment to choose from, would I have to destroy my own enchantment to play Cloudchaser Eagle? Or can I choose NOT to destroy a target enchantment (since its mine)?  more

Resolved Question: Magic: The Gathering.. simple ruling question on 2 cards?

Q1 Suture Spirit - Creature. (3): "Regenerate target creature." Does the Regenerate ability here allow it to bring back one of my own monsters that I just destroyed this turn with a Sorcery? or does it only work with battle destruction? Also, can Suture Spirit use regenerate to protect another of my creatures from being destroyed in battle or by an effect? if so, which creature would tap? Q2 The following: "gain 1 life for each black and/or red permanent target opponent controls" - does this mean I would gain 1 life or 2 life if my opponent controlled a single red/black hybrid permanent?  more

Resolved Question: Magic the gathering: Prevent all combat damage?

We're trying to figure this out, my boyfriend and I. I'm wanting to cast a spell to do 3 damage to his life points but he has a card called Fog [elf card] that is an instant and says "Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn". Does this card only protect him from actual combat between creatures or does it also protect him from spells and things too? I'm new to Magic and he's not but he said this is one rule he never figured out. I tried googling and gave up. There's just a flood of random rules out there that I don't want to sift through to answer this question so we can just finish this game lol.  more

Resolved Question: Questions about Magic the gathering?

I was wondering about Trample and bouncing a defending creature. I was not sure where to find a clarification in the Rules Book. I attack with a creature 7/7 Trampler. The defending player blocks with a 3/3 and bounces the creature before damage can go onto the stack. Does the defending player still take any damage, since I can't assign damage to the creature that has been bounced?  more

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering question about sorcery/instant combo.?

I am fairly new to MTG and am building a saproling deck to annihilate my buddies who got me into the game. I am familiar with the stack rule but am unsure if the combo I want to pull off will work. Here is what I am trying to accomplish: I have several cards that will produce multiple saprolings throughout play. Eventually I will want to play the following combo on one of my turns: -Hour of Reckoning (sorcery - Destroy all non-token creatures) -Scapegoat (instant - Sacrifice a creature: Return any number of target creatures you control to owner's hand.) I would like to play Hour of Reckoning first to see if anybody is going to counter it. If not, I would play Scapegoat to return my non-token cards (e.g. Mycoloth, Scion of the Wild, etc) to my hand and save them from the graveyard. Would this combo work in saving my non-token creatures and still wipe out those of my opponents? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: In magic the Gathering what is the rule on discarding cards?

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering: Will Spirit Link work on a card like Bloodfire Colossus?

I'm wondering if Spirit Link will activate and heal your for all the damage done by Bloodfire Colossus's "R, Sacrifice Bloodfire Colossus: Bloodfire Colossus deals 6 damage to each creature and each player". Bloodfire Colossus will be in the graveyard by the time the ability gets off the stack right? Will Spirit Link still be activated by the damage; I'm pretty sure Spirit Link will also be in the graveyard by the time to damage is dealt. I'm also pretty sure the rules say to use the "last known" information about the creature in times like this, but does that mean Spirit Link's effect should go off or not?  more

Resolved Question: Magic the gathering-- Help for first time tournament player?

Hiya. This friday I might be playing in a Friday Night Magic tournament with the booster draft format. The store also has weekly tournaments on Sundays with a standard or legendary format. I have played in Yu-gi-oh tournaments when I was a bit younger, (I'm 15, then I was about 11 or 12), so I know how tournaments work and what they are like. Yet I have never played in MTG tournament before. So what are some of the general rules for booster, standard, and legendary format tournaments? And what are some of the banned cards?  more

Resolved Question: Magic The Gathering: A few questions from an MTG beginner?

1 - Angel's Feather is an artifact that gives 1 life point each time an opponent plays a white spell. What exactly counts as a spell? Someone told me a spell is anything that goes on the stack. So would they get a point each time a white creature attacks? What about blocking? Or is it only when the card is initially played? 2 - If a creature can't attack because of an enchantment, but can still block, can it deal damage to &/or kill the attacking creature? 3 - If I have a 3/3 creature and my opponent plays an instant that reduces both my power and toughness by 3 until end of turn but no attack is made against my creature, does my creature die or is it's ability to attack and defend just temporarily weakened? 4 - Can you suggest any good online tutorials that would help me get a better grasp of the rules? Thanks in advance.  more

Resolved Question: Overdrawing in Magic: The Gathering?

When my friend and I were playing Magic: The Gathering, I summoned Swans of Bryn Argoll. Then, during his turn, he attacked me, and caused himself to overdraw by 7. I told him to put 7 cards into his library and shuffle, but he claims the rules state that he must discard 7 cards. This, however, made me feel that it was cheap and unfair, as there are some cards that gain benefits for going into the graveyard(see Muscle Burst, below) and it's completely pointless. P.S: Can somebody also tell me if monsters with trample deal extra damage to me after I block with Swans of Bryn Argoll? Swans of Bryn Argoll: Flying If a source would deal damage to Swans of Bryn Argoll, prevent that damage. The source's controller draws cards equal to the damage prevented this way. Muscle Burst: Instant Target creature gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is 3 plus the number of Muscle Burst cards in all graveyards.  more

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering Combo Rules Question?

I've got an old Time spiral block mono white deck that uses Mangara of Corondor combined with bounce cards like Whitemane Lion so I can use Mangara's effect repeatedly. I just got a few Antler Skulkin from a newer set and I'm wondering how it interacts with my old combo. Here's the idea: before, I would activate Mangara, then cast Whitemane on top of it, so the Whitemane resolves, Mangara goes back to my hand and my opponents card is still removed from game. I know that part of it works. But now I want to have Mangara and a Whitemane Lion both in play already and use the Skulkin to give the lion persist before it dies. Now when the lion comes back from the persist effect, I have to return a creature to my hand. Can I activate Mangara and then return him to my hand like in the original combo, or is that impossible since the bounce effect is put into the stack first? Or can I activate Mangara in such a way as to have the lion coming back from persist put in top of it on the stack, same as in the original combo? Please cite sources from the comprehensive rules, etc. where applicable, as I’m sure I’ll need to prove this to several other people, if it works.  more

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering: Elder Dragon Highlander-Norin?

What is EDH? It's an MTG variant! http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~geduggan/EDH_rules.html Who is this Norin fellow? http://beta.gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=113512 I've decided to make a Norin the Wary based Magic the Gathering deck in EDH format (he's my general). This is mostly just to amuse myself. However, one look at Norin tells me that it won't be easy. I've already found Pandemonium and Confusion in the Ranks, but what other spells should I include to abuse this fellow? Practically any suggestions are welcome. The combo with Pandemonium becomes better when you get Ronin Warclub and Obsidian Battle-Axe. Plus, Norin normally comes into play TWICE(!) in a round ^.^  more

Resolved Question: MTG rules on an obscure situation?

I ran into an odd situation on Magic the Gathering Online last night while playing in a booster draft against a friend. The situation seems like a bug to us, and was caused by my own miscalculation, but it ended up winning me the game (though I still lost the match). I attacked with a non-flying creature that is normally 2/2, but had been pumped up to 4/4 through Devour. The creature also has the ability to be given Trample, but I did not use it. My friend blocked with a non-flying, non-reach creature that starts out as a 1/1 with Shroud that gains a +1/+1 token every time a creature is put into a graveyard, and had thusly been pumped up to 7/7. After defenders had been declared, but before damage was dealt, I played an instant that gave my creature flying until end of turn. (I had meant to do that before defenders were declared, but had a brain fart and did not do that in the pre-combat phase.) I was not entirely sure how this would be resolved, but I expected that since defenders had been declared already, the 4/4 and the 7/7 would trade damage normally and the flight was thus meaningless. The creatures did indeed trade damage. However, for no reason either of us can think of (and this situation did not seem to be covered in the comprehensive rulebook online), both the 4/4 and the 7/7 died. Any ideas if there is a rule regarding non-fliers who don't have reach blocking non-fliers that become fliers before damage is dealt?  more

Resolved Question: Need help with selling magic: the gathering cards on ebay?

Hi ya. When I found out my Aunt will let me sell me MTG cards on her eBay account, I came here and asked what were the rarest cards, not knowing what I have. I received answers of card names from the Alpha/Beta sets, yet the oldest cards I found were 2 cards from Unlimited (2circle of protection:reds.) Fortunatly, I found many revised cards, about 30 of them rare, about 350 total. I also managed to find about 8 yavamiya ants, mutiple seal of dooms, an autographed revised edition Zombie Master, about 50 foils, about 150 cards with a gold symbol, about 1,000 manas, and about 1,100 core sets cards (4th-8th). Overall I have somewhere between 8,000-10,000 cards, plus many unused case slips, 7 giant collectors boxes, old rule booklets, 5 collectors books, dozens of old deck boxes, and cards from every expansion set up until gauntlet, chronicle cards, a polar card, and one unidentified card from 1995. The problem is I want to make money, so that means i can't risk it by letting my Aunt sell them altogether and have the highest bid be just a few bucks. I am going to write her a letter with directions on how to group them, I have just not figured out how I will yet. If anyone has sold MTG cards on eBay and been successful before, please give me some advice. Also, the cards that do not have a multi-colored symbols indicating whether they are common, uncommon, or rare, how do you tell if they are rare? I want to go throw those ones so I don't miss out on selling an expansive one. Resolved Question: Magic The Gathering Ruling -- "Gain control of target creature"?

When a card (such as Nicolas Bolas) says, "gain control of target creature", I assume it only means creatures in play. Is that correct? For instance, could I gain control of a creature in my opponents graveyard? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Magic the Gathering Rule Question. (Kithkins)?

I have Cenn's Heir on the field and Militia's Pride. Does Cenn's Heir get the +1/+1 counters for the attacking tokens? Must i pay the cost for Militia's Pride right after i attack with a creature or can i do it right when my opponent blocks my Cenn's Heir.  more

Resolved Question: I have a "Magic the Gathering" rules question about Tolarian Entrancer?

I have a question on the rules for a card like tolarian enchanter. The card reads thus: Card Type: Creature - Human Wizard Card Text: Whenever Tolarian Entrancer becomes blocked by a creature, gain control of that creature at end of combat. Power/Tough: 1/1 If he blocks a 2/2 creature and is destroyed, do I still take control of that 2/2 creature?  more

Resolved Question: I am wondering about some rules pertaining to magic the gather, About Creatures, abilities and so on?

I was playing magic with my friend and i had mother of ruins. Its been a while since i have played. He states that the mother of ruin ability "tap: target creature gets protection from a color." Now he states that one i can't give it protection from gold (because it isn't a color), 2: it doesn't protect it from combat damage (Ex. i block a black 2/2 creature with a red 2/2 creature and tap mother of ruins to give my 2/2 creature protection from that black, will is still take 2 damage and die?), Also he had a enchantment card where he taps 2 swamps to give his creatures shadow, so he declared 5 creatures with shadow and states that at that point i have to decide if i give his creature (of my choosing) protection from black so it does not get that ability and i can block it. Well he wanted me to decide at that point before he declared his attackers so it was somewhat wasteful, wouldn't i be able to give it protection after he declares his attackers. Final question: Are all cards able to attack considered to be creatures. (for example i see avatar of woe : creature-avatar is what it states and he has another card nightmare and it didn't say creature on it, i ask because the card he used to give them shadow says target creature, and i found it strange some say creatures and some don't.  more
